How American democracy dies

This year you really need to vote. Because if you don't vote this time, you may never be able to vote again.

Let me tell you how American democracy can die, in just a couple easy steps.

Step one: the Republican gets elected president this year.

Step two: as he promised, he pardons the insurrectionists who attacked our Capitol on January 6 and who have plead guilty or have been duly convicted in courts of law. He pardons them because they supported him.

That signals to the country that the Rule of Law has ended in the United States. His supporters can break any law on his behalf, and he will pardon them. They can threaten and commit violence against those who have opposed him, and against their family members, as he himself has threatened many times, knowing that he will pardon them.

Where there is no Rule of Law, there is no democracy. Who will dare to run against him, who will vote to impeach him, when the lives of their children will be at risk from people who can harm them and then be pardoned?

American democracy, crafted by our founding fathers and mothers, and for which our brave military gave their lives over the centuries, can die just like this, in a couple of easy steps. Paul Torkelson and the Republicans seem to be OK with this. I most certainly am not, and neither are you.

Please help me to sleep at night by giving me any good reason why this would not happen. I can't think of any.

The only way to stop it is back at Step One. Do you see why, this time, you need to vote? And you need to vote for Democrats.
